Intent

At Great Milton we aim to inspire and  encourage children's natural fascination and curiosity in order that they develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. The curriculum is designed to ensure that teaching equips pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress through the school, we aim to build on their growing knowledge of the world and help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. 

Implementation

Based upon the National Curriculum and the individual needs of our children, we have planned. Geography topics across each key stage with the aim of covering all the required objectives. Where appropriate, there is a cross-curricular approach with the use of art, music, drama and English in order to enrich their experience and understanding,

Maps are displayed throughout the school and atlases are made good use of. Teachers are encouraged to reference these when appropriate during lessons to help to develop an awareness of the globe.

By the time children leave Great Milton they will:

Have an excellent knowledge of where places are and what they are like. Children will have an extensive base of geographical knowledge and vocabulary. Be fluent in complex, geographical enquiry and the ability to apply questioning skills and use effective, analytical and presentational techniques. We encourage our children to have a passion for and commitment to the subject, and a real sense of curiosity to find out about the world and the people who live there.
